Endless Summer
Jennifer awoke to a warm and inviting sun on her face, she sat up in bed, happy to be alive. Happy to be able to challenge a new day, especially after the dream she had last night, but she didn’t dwell on those thoughts. Instead she got up eager to start her day. As she headed for the bathroom, she didn’t hear her little brother, Thomas scrambling to beat her there. Thomas awake before her? Now that was peculiar. Confused by the notion, Jennifer found herself looking at the bathroom clock, the numbers were discombobulated and discordant, she couldn’t bear to look at them it just didn’t make sense. But she must have had time, right? She didn’t hear her mom calling her and telling her to hurry up, so she must’ve. It didn’t concern her, the day was going too well
Jennifer stripped out of her pajamas she noticed that she had two weird rectangles on her chest, she dismissed it saying that she probably just slept weird last night. Jennifer let the water wash over her, the water was perfect. She never wanted to leave, as she washed she sang her favorite songs. Then the lights flickered and the bathroom shook violently. Jennifer scrambled out of the shower and scurried back to her room as she sat on her bed her body still tingled, her skin crawled and she thought she smelled burning flesh. Confused she opened the door but a different smell met her nostrils, it was French toast! With all thoughts of the bathroom emptied from her mind Jennifer got dressed in all her favorite colors and bounded happily down the stairs.
When Jennifer walked into the kitchen she saw that her mom had made a smorgasbord of all her favorite breakfast foods. At first Jennifer was excited to dig in, then she saw the absolute anguish on her mother’s face. Jennifer lingered in the doorway, hesitant to enter. She called out
“Hey mom, is everything alright?” Jennifer asked unsteadily
“Hey baby. i’m here” her mom said sadly
“I know mom, I can see you. I’m not blind.” Jennifer said laughing and hugging her mother
She happily ate her food, not noticing that the lights were flickering again, or the fact that her mom was crying uncontrollably. After Jennifer had her fill, she grabbed her bag and headed for the door. She looked back at her mom who was still crying, She wanted to console her, if only she knew what was wrong. Instead she just looked back and said
“I love you mom, I’ll see you when I get home.” Jennifer said moving for the door
“Just come back, please.” Said her mother in a ragged voice
When she looked back to respond to her mother she thought she saw a hospital room, but in a flash she was back in the kitchen, and alone. Her thoughts started to swim Jennifer ran out of the house, she looked for her car and didn’t see it. Her head started to hurt, she started to remember, she didn’t want to, this day had been so perfect, she never wanted it to end, but the sky was darkening, and before she could get her bearings Jennifer was back in the car. It had been raining, she had been trying to get home, but she lost control, and slammed into the bridge, everything spun, then she felt cold, then there was darkness. When she awoke she was in a hospital and in unimaginable pain. In her brief moments of lucidity, she tried to call out to her mom, but there was no sound. There was nothing as Jennifer’s eyes rolled back in her head, and the inky black took her again, the last thing Jennifer ever heard was her mother wail.
Jennifer woke up to a warm and inviting sun on her face, her eyes widened in horror as she realized her predicament.
